Parenting is hard work…having a child with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) can make things more difficult. Which is why I wish the D in SPD stood for difficulties instead of disorder.
Hi, my name is Aricka. It’s pronounced Erica (eh-ruh-kuh) just spelled differently, thanks a lot mom and dad! It seems to be a conversation starter when people try to pronounce it or even better tell me how they think I need to say it. I am a mom and I have a full-time job. I wish I could add MOM to my resume, because as we all know it IS another job.
My son Gio is four years old. He has sensory sensitivities, a language delay, and we are in the beginning stages of getting him tested for autism. My fiancé and I noticed some symptoms around the age of two but didn’t start to seek professional help until he was almost three. Our ignorance to the disorder and symptoms made us think it was just a phase. Boy, were we wrong! Still, I try not to beat myself up about it, the outside world does that enough.
I decided to write this blog to share our experiences; the bad, the good, and sometimes funny. I will share things that worked, things that didn’t, and things that I am still in the process of learning. I want to connect with you, my readers, so you know that you are not alone. I am not here to preach or judge. I’m just a regular mom sharing my stories in hopes that you might be able to relate. You might even feel comfortable enough to share your own stories and/or tips you may have. Like I said before parenting is hard, full of ups and downs, so take this journey with me. OH, and thanks for visiting my blog!
