Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) affects up to 16% of children in the US. It doesn’t seem like a lot but that is over 3 million of our children! Some of these children might also have Speech and Language Delays.
What is SPD?
SPD is when your brain processes and/or reacts to triggers through your five senses (hearing, sight, touch, smell, and taste). Possible triggers are: loud noises, large crowds, different textures (i.e. jeans, sticky, prickly) foul smell, and different foods. One may also experience two different types of movement processing- vestibular and proprioception. These can be defined by: bumping into things, being unable to control their limbs in spaces, and hard to engage in conversation and play.
